For the past few years there has been many article or conversations about whether Die Hard is a Christmas Movie… Well it is…
But this is not about Die Hard, this is about the original Christmas Action Thriller….
LETHAL WEAPON
Yes the original and a far better Christmas and Action Movie…And here is my quick rundown.
For one it came out first.
It start and ends with Christmas Music, I will never hear Jingle Bell Rocks without thinking of Amanda Hucksacker plunging to her death amid Christmas lit apartments.
It is set during Christmas time, not just a Christmas party. Die Hard may have had a Christmas Tree, but LW had a Drug Bust/ Shoot out in a Christmas Tree sale lot, with Rigg and crooks running and hiding among the trees.
SCROOGE PD
It is a basically buddy cop Scrooge tale. A story of a man, who has lost a purpose and all sources of happiness. He has grown suicidal over the resent death of his wife.
In one of the most intensely emotional scene, Riggs attempts suicide only to be interrupted by the Bug Bunny Scrooge Cartoon. You think that scene playing in the background, when Bugs Bunny burst in proclaiming MERRY CHRISTMAS was a coincident. This brings Riggs down and he breaksdown knowing that the world need men like Riggs and his wife would want him to continue of for a few more movies. It is one of the most realistic suicidal scenes and Gibson acting is scarily real.
The Scrooge theme reappears when Mr. Joshua, the damn white haired jack rabbit Motherf*(Ker, shoots the TV in Murtagh’s house playing Scrooge and he yells “It’s Goddamn Christmas” Why? Because he is a crazy angry man whose disconnection to society and hw better to portray then through a hatred for Christmas.
Through the contentious relation he finds with Murtagh, Riggs finds a new family that welcomes him in at what better time Christmas Dinner, where he had just presented the Hollow Point Bullet he had set aside for his suicide.
And just as he movie started it ends with a Christmas song this time WHITE CHRISTMAS.
